Community Enhancement

| Scott Hancock Chair, Community Enhancement |
The aesthetic beauty of a community sends a clear message to potential businesses, industry, residents, and visitors that we want them here and that we have pride in our community. Although there are many beautiful elements to Hopkinsville and Christian County, there are also many areas that need attention.
The Community Enhancement Committee is a public/private partnership of people who are passionate about enhancing Hopkinsville-Christian County through a variety of methods. The committee’s role is to advocate for and support projects that create an environment in which enhancement of the community occurs and to create plans which will lead to a comprehensive approach to beautification.
The Community Enhancement Committee, formed in September 2005, has been successful in putting a Landscape Ordinance for commercial properties into place which incorporates green space and plantings as properties are developed. The Committee has also successfully obtained a beautification grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to enhance the new interchange at Exit 7 of the Edward T. Breathitt Parkway.
On a monthly basis, the Community Enhancement Committee selects a Chamber Member business to receive the “Caught With Curb Appeal” award. Spotters watch for a nicely landscaped green spaces, beautiful pots of flowers, fresh coats of paint, a new sign, a wreath on the front door, nice window displays, no temporary signs or banners, and a clean, litter-free parking lot. To date, more than 20 businesses have been recognized.
As a result of the Committee’s work, the Mayor of Hopkinsville has recently designated the Beautification Commission to serve as the organization that monitors the city’s cleanliness and takes care of public spaces.
Presently, members of the Committee are working with the Hopkinsville Public Works Department to develop a master enhancement plan that prioritizes key points of entry, main intersections, and key attractions in terms of the addition of landscaping and uniform signage.
The Community Enhancement Committee will work hand-in-hand with the Beautification Commission to provide a streamlined approach to ensuring that our city and county are cleaner, greener, and always displaying that “welcome mat” for potential businesses, industry, residents, and visitors.
